Em Espanha há também uma família do mesmo apelido, tirado da casa e solar da M., no vale de Ribara, na Galiza, cujo senhor mais antigo que se conhece foi Rui Fernandes da M., o Feio, casado com D. Sancha Ramires, de quem teve geração, entre a qual se encontram os Matas, de Ciudad Rodrigo. Nos princípios do século XV viveu Gonçalo Anes da M., casado com Mécia Teles, filha de Nuno Teles de Faria, de quem proveio muita descendência do seu apelido. Houve em Portugal outros Matas que tiveram princípios em Luís Gomes de Elvas Coronel, filho de António Gomes de Elvas, possuidor de grande casa, e de sua mulher, Brites Mendes de Azevedo, neta paterna de Manuela Mendes de Tânger, a quel D. Manuel I deu este apelido e armas novas. Luís Gomes de Elvas Coronel teve grossíssimos cabedais e viveu com grande fausto, justificou sua no breza em 1607 e desejando ter apelido e nov solar pediu a D. Filipe II lhe desse por solar a Quinta da M. de Flores, que havia comprado às freiras de Odivelas, situada em Loures, no termo de Lisboa, junto da igreja paroquial. O soberano lhe concedeu a graça pedida, passando-lhe Carta em 18 de Fevereiro de 1606 para que fosse em Portugal fidalgo de solar conhecido e que tivesse o apelido de M. e armas novas. Foi fialgo da Casa do mesmo Rei, pelos grande serviços que lhe prestara e em consideração de um donativo de 70.000 cruzados teve o ofício de correio-mor de Portugal e de todos os seus domínios ...
