Don Juan Francisco de Hita dice que son originarios del Ducado de Borgoña, y que pasaron a España. En efecto, mosén Jaime Febrer nos habla de Jaime Matheu, valeroso soldado francés, que aprisionó muchos moros en Mallorca, desde donde pasó a Valencia luchando en el Puig.
