Este noble y antiguo linaje, se extendió ampliamente por España y que acaso tenga relación con las diversas villas del mismo nombre que hoy pertenecen a las provincias de León, Valladolid y Zamora. Flórez de Ocariz cita a varios varones de este apellido que se distinguieron por su talento y valor. Una de las casas de M. que tuvo su señorío en el lugar de Villanueva de Valderojo, que hoy pertenece al Ayuntamiento de Ferreros de Arriba y partido judicial de Alcañices (Zamora). De ella descendió Antonio M. Barrio, que fué Señor de Villanueva de Valderojo y nació en Vidayanes, el partido judicial de Villalpando, en la misma provincia de Zamora. Celebró su enlace con doña María Fernández, natural del lugar de San Cristóbal, cercano a Villanueva de Valderojo, y fueron padres de Cristóbal M. Barrio y Fernández, natural del lugar de San Cristóbal y Señor de Villanueva de Valderojo, que casó con doña Ana María Terán y Losada, natural del lugar de Villalbraz, del Ayuntamiento y partido judicial de Valencia de Don Juan, León (hija de Francisco Terán, Señor de Don Bermudo, en Galicia, y de doña Ana de Losada, natural de San Lorenzo de Trius, también en Galicia). De esa unión nació Juan José Cayetano M. Barrio y Terán, Señor de Villanueva de Valderojo, natural de Benavente (Zamora) y Caballero de la Orden de Calatrava, en la que ingresó en 1711. Otra casa de M. hubo en la villa de Lillo, del partido judicial de su nombre (Toledo) y de ella fué José M., natural de Lillo. Con el descubrimiento del Nuevo Mundo, muchos fueron los hombres y mujeres que cruzaron el Atlántico en busca de un nuevo horizonte y en concreto los que portando el apellido Melgar extendieron su linaje por América. Así pues, tras nuestra investigación realizada en los Archivos Generales de Indias, donde consta el nombre de los pasajeros que viajaron al Nuevo Mundo, encontramos que Ana de Melgar, natural de Valladolid, hija de Diego de Melgar y de Francisca Rodríguez, partió hacia Guatemala, el 22 de mayo de 1580.
