Família de pequena categoria, que se tornou ilustre no século XVI. O ascendente mais antigo que se conhece é Pedro Fernandes, homem muito honrado e principal de Alcácer do Sal, onde nasceu. Teve do matrimónio a Afonso Fernandes e a António Fernandes, que defenderam Alcácer, tomado o partido de D. João I contra Castela, o primeiro dos quais foi secretário da Rainha D. Filipa, mulher do mesmo soberano, e fora de matrimónio houve a Pedro Fernandes, morador em Alcácer, tesoureiro da Infante D. Filipa, filha de D. Duarte. Entre outros filhos, Pedro Fernandes teve Manuel Fernadens, que foi à Índia por capitão de uma nau no ano de 1505, sendo capitão-mor Pedro de Anaia, e estendido este por capitão de Sofala serviu aí de feitor e ajudou a defender esta praça do cerco posto pelos mouros. Manuel Fernandes neste cerco cortou a cabeça ao re mouro e se recolheu à fortaleza, da qual pouco depois o fizeram capitão por morrer Pedro de Anaia, cuidando, então, de a fortificar, para o que mandou fazer uma torre de pedra e cal, a primeira que nela houve. D. Manuel I, sabendo dos seus feitos, lhe deu o foro de fidalgio de sua Casa e o criou fidalgo de cota de armas, concedendo-lhe com as armas novas o apelido de M., em alusão à torre por ele levantada, tudo por carta de Junho de 1512.
