Debe tener este apellido estrecha relación con la anteiglesia de Mendiola, del Ayuntamiento de Escoriaza y partido judicial de Vergara, en Guipúzcoa, y con el lugar de Mendiola, del Concejo y partido judicial de Vitoria, en Álava. Casas de este apellido guipuzcoano hubo en las villas de Placencia y de Eíbar. Otras dos radicaron en Léniz, una de ellas llamada M. de Urarte. En Vizcaya hallamos también casa de M.; dos en Guernica, denominada una de ellas M. Bengoa; otra en Ceberio, villa del partido judicial de Bilbao, y otra en Zalduía, del de Guernica. En Álava, y sin dada originarias del lugar de M., hubo también familias de este apellido. De una de ellas fué Antón de M., vecino de Virgata Menor, que en unión de su primo hermano Andrés de M. y Vergara, sostuvo pleito de hidalguía con el mencionado lugar de Virgala Menor, del Concejo de Arraya y partido judicial de Vitoria. Otra familia M. establecida en el Valle de Aramayona, del partido de Vitoria, tuvo línea en Anzuola (Guipúzcoa) y a ésta perteneció Francisco Isaac de M. y Múgica, bautizado en Anzuola el 8 de Junio de 1753. Este caballero vivió en la Habana e incoó expediente de hidalguía en la Real Chancillería de Valladolid, obteniendo Real provisión el 11 de Septiembre de 1786. De la casa de Zaldúa descendió Domingo de M. y Garitonandia, natural de Zaldúa, que el 29 de Octubre de 1830 obtuvo declaración de vizcainía en la Chancillería de Valladolid. ...
