Cette maison originaire de St-Flour, s'est fixée vers 1350 en Gévaudan. Filiation suivie depuis Pierre Mercier (1356), père de Guillaume dont le testament fut brûlé par ordre du Chapitre de la Cathédrale de Mende en (1391). Un membre de cette famille donna l'an 1529, pour la rançon du fils de François Ier en otage en Espagne, le dixième du revenu de ses biens nobles, soit trente cinq livres tournois. Pierre Mercier de Malaval, épousa le 29 octobre 1571 Jeanne du Mazel, dame de Ste-Colombe. Sylvestre, seigneur du Mas de Chaudenac, habitant Langogne, fut maintenu dans sa noblesse sur preuves de cinq générations le 12 décembre 1668. Jacques-Joseph-Nicolas assista en qualité de député à l'assemblée des Etats du bailliage de Gévaudan. Christophe-Louis, inscrit en 1793 sur la liste des émigrés de la Lozère, épousa Anne-Sophie de Veyre de Soras dont: Henri Mercier de Malaval marié à Léonie de Licques de Ferraignhe (1816-1887). Leur postérité est de nos jours établie, au château de la Bernarde près le Puy. Branche distinguée à St-Flour pendant la guerre des Anglais: des notaires royaux de la Haute-Auvergne, etc. Des officiers, chevaliers de St-Louis, dont un lieutenant au régiment de Penthièvre (XVIIIème siècle).
