Antica ed aristocratica famiglia francese, oriunda da Saint-Michel, di chiara ed avita virtù, un cui ramo, anteriormente al XV secolo, passò a risiedere in Corsica e, successivamente, in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Ivi, infatti, verosimilmente, nel XVI secolo, viveva un Luigi, il quale, essendosi distinto, per coraggio ed ardore, sotto i vessilli della Santa Lega, nel celebre fatto d'armi della Battaglia di Lepanto, del 1571, ottenne i privilegi del cavalierato. L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, invece, andrebbe ricercata in uan modificazione, dovuta a fenomeni di fonetica dialettale e/o ad errori di tradizione manoscritta, dell'antico nome brettone "Merian", una forma alterata del nome medioevale latino "Marianus", appartenuto, probabilmente, ad un, oggi ignoto, capostipite. In ogni modo, tal casato, in ogni epoca, riuscì a distinguersi, grazie agli elevati personaggi, a cui diede i natali.
