La famiglia ha vestito l'abito di Malta nel 1789 e, per successione di Casa Serra, ha ottenuto il titolo di principe di Carovigno, a seguito del matrimonio tra donna Maria, sorella ed erede del principe Giovan Battista Serra, deceduto senza eredi nel 1666, e Giovan Battista Messia y Prado, Regio Consigliere.
