Linaje muy noble y antiguo del Valle de Peñamellera, que antiguamente perteneció a las Asturias de Santillana y hoy es del partido judicial de Llanes (Asturias). Según algunos autores, los M. proceden del famoso Conde don Vela, que en los últimos años de su vida se retiró al mencionado Valle de Peñamellera, siendo enterrado en la parroquia de San Pedro de Plenis, sita en el lugar de Alles, y sobre cuyo templo ejercieron patronato los M. En tiempo de la Reina doña Urraca se celebraron en Oviedo unas Cortes, a las cuales asistieron tres hermanos, llamados Sancho Vela, Bermudo Vela y Martín Vela, a los cuales consideran los tratadistas como descendientes del mencionado Conde don Vela. Estos tres caballeros, o sus sucesores, debieron establecerse en el lugar llamado Mier, del mismo Valle de Peñamellera, y por ello su descendencia se apellidó M. De esta casa de Mier, tan antigua y de origen tan noble, procedieron otras, como la de Trespalacios, Cosío, Escandón, Cáraves, Caso, Hoyo y de la Guerra. Gozó la casa de Mier del derecho de representar a la Abadía de San Pedro de Plecin en lo antiguo. Se extendieron sus individios por todo el Valle de Peñamellera, residiendo en los lugares de Pedroso, Lombero, Porzanero, Collada, Rozagás y Alles. Pasó a Santander. De la primitiva casa del lugar de Mier, descendió Fernando Antonio de M., natural de Mier, que contrajo matrimonio con doña Toribia Torre, de igual naturaleza a la que hizo madre de Dionisio M. y Torre y Juan Bautista M. y Torre.
