Apelido antigo, derivado do nome próprio Miguel, de que foi patronímico, nesta forma ou nas de Miguel ou Migueis. Isto é, começado a usar como sobrenome indicativo de filiação por alguém cujo pai havia recebido em baptismo o nome de Miguel, transmitiu-o ele depois a seus descendentes já como apelido. Assim se formaram várias famílias tanto em Portugal como em Espanha, uma das quais, era muito antiga na Galiza, onde já em 1146 vivia Lopo Miguens, Alferes-Mor de D.Fernan Perez de Trava, com quem esteve na conquista de Almeria, e cujas armas são já citadas por Frei Filipe de Gândara, na sua obra Armas e Triunfos de Galizia. De Lopo veio a ser filho Fernão Miguens, o qual, para memorizar a sua presença na batalha de Navas de Tolosa, acrescentou as armas paternas com a bordadura aqui indicada. Foram seus filhos ou netos Lopo Miguens e D.Paula Miguens, de quem descendiam os duques de Pastrana e outras ilustres casas de Espanha. De um deles provinha um André Michel, que vivia em Marselha, França, de onde seu filho Pedro Michel veio para Portugal. Fixou-se em Lisboa e foi Cavaleiro da Ordem de Cristo.
