Apellido de origen francés, que enlaza con la Casa de Cabrera en Canarias, por el matrimonio celebrado en Lanzarote entre el Conquistador Don Diego de Cabrera y la Noble señora Doña Francisca M. de Bethencourt. El apellido M. procede de un noble caballero francés que acompañó a Bethencourt en la conquista de Lanzarote. Aybone o Ybone M. (Ybone es el francés Yvon o Yves; el apellido exacto era Meilland), casado con Catalina Bolangel (probablemente Boulanger), se estableció después en Lanzarote. El hijo de este matrimonio, Juan de M., casó con Elvira de Bethencourt, hija de Arriete Perdomo y de Inés Margarita deBethencourt, cuyos hijos fueron: Luis M. de Bethencourt, que contrajo nupcias en Sevilla con Isabel Sánchez de Trujillo. Juan M. de Bethencourt, Personero e Gran Canaria en 1504, Alférez de la Conquista de Tenerife y casado con una hija de Alonso Jáimez de Sotomayor, que tuvo igual cargo en la conquista de Gran Canaria. Catalina de Bethencourt, que vivió casada con Juan Camacho, Hidalgo de Jerez de la Frontera y que luego acompañó a Diego de Herrera y a Doña Inés Peraza, siendo nombrado por Don Alonso Fernández de Lugo, escribano de Fuerteventura en 1503. Diego M. de Bethencourt, Regidor, Alcalde Mayor y Alférez Mayor de Gran Canaria. El segundo Adelantada, Don Pedro Fernández de Lugo, le otorgó sus poderes para la isla de Gran Canaria, el 6 de noviembre de 1508 y, en su nombre, su primo Andrés de Bethencourt hizo probanzas en Francia de su Nobleza y Blasones. Otra casa muy antigua. En documentos antiguos aparece escrito este apellido de esas maneras indistintamente. Bernardo M., caballero mallorquín, como representante del lugar de Guiñent, juró sacramento y homenaje al rey don Alonso III de Aragón. Gabriel M., en 1515, fue miembro del grande y general Consejo de Mallorca.
