La più antica memoria certa di questa nobile famiglia rimonta al 1478, in cui troviamo un Giuliano che da Faenza si trasferì a Ravenna come segretario di Obizo Polentani. Però si crede che questa famiglia fiorisse in Ravenna nel XII secolo sapendosi che un Ugolino, essendo capitano dei Ravennati nell'esercito dell'Imperatore Fedrico contro Faenza, quivi morì nel 1183. Francesco, figlio del suddetto Giuliano, fu spedito nel 1438 a Venezia con autorità di trattare la cessione della città a quella Repubblica. Egli ordì all'uopo una congiura d'accordo col fratello Opizo a danno di Ostasio Polentani che signoreggiava Ravenna, e dopo molti sacrifici i due fratelli riuscirono nell'intento, onde Opizo ottenne la restituzione dei beni confiscatigli dal tiranno, l'onore di essere aggregato al senato veneto e la esenzione in perpetuo per sè e suoi di ogni dazio e gabella.
