Esta noble y antigua familia es solariega de Guipúzcoa. Ya en el año 1212 se encuentran caballeros M. en la batalla de Muradal, ganada por el Rey don Alonso IX de Castilla al rey moro Mahomet "el Verde". Su primitivo solar radicó en la que hoy es villa de Mondragón, del partido judicial de Vergara, en la mencionada provincia de Guipúzcoa. Esteban de Garibay dice que esta villa se llamó primeramente Arrazate, hasta que en 1260 el Rey de Castilla don Alonso X "el Sabio" le dió el nombre de Mondragón. Ahora bien, y como hemos dicho, en la batalla de Muradal, dada en 1212, se hallaron caballeros de este linaje, así como en la del Salado, en 1340, fechas ambas anteriores a la nueva denominación de la villa donde radicaba su primitivo solar. Esto parece indicar que la familia M. no tomó su apellido del nombre de la villa, sino que acaso ésta lo recibió de aquélla. Muchos autores afirman, sin embargo, que los M. tomaron el apellido del nombre de la villa donde radicaban. Pocos detalles se conocen de la rama troncal de los M. que poseyó el señorío de la villa del mismo nombre. Sin duda, y con motivo de algún enlace, se trasladaron sus individuos a Galicia, donde fueron Señores de Ortigueira. Residieron en la ciudad de Santiago de Compostela y allí nació Juan de M., Señor de la Casa de Mondragón, en Guipúzcoa, y de Ortigueira, en Galicia, nacido en la ciudad de Compostela, de la que fué Regidor. Contrajo matrimonio con doña Isabel Teixeiro y Abraaldes, de igual naturaleza. ...
