Les recherches étymologiques et historiques indiquent les familles suivantes parmi celles qui ont l’origine possible de ce nom: Famille Monnier ou Mosnier: originaire de Bretagne; Julien, épouse en 1584 Françoise Moreau, dont: Jean, vivant en 1603, marié à Anne Viau, père et mère de Pierre, juge criminel à Nantes, marié en 1649 à Françoise Macé de la Roche; un conseiller au parlement et deux maîtres des comptes de 1695 à 1728. Autre famille originaire de Provence. Jean, sieur du Revest, conseiller du Roi, lieutenant particulier dans la sénéchaussée de Forcalquier. (Armorial Général 1696, Provence II, folio 54).
