Antica ed assai illustre famiglia del lecchese sorta dall'unione di due nobili casati del Nord Italia, due rami dei quali si unirono, dando origine alla famiglia Monforti-Ferrario. Il primo, quello dei Monforti, trae origine dal Piemonte e, più precisamente, dalla città di Fossano, trovandosi esso tra le dodici famiglie di Piazza di Fossano, privilegiate di casa merlata e del porto del baldacchino (Sentenza 1518). I suoi membri furono consignori di Carpenea ed un ramo si trapiantò in Borgogna. Tra i personaggi che maggiormente si sono distinti, ricordiamo: Tommaso, vicario di Savigliano (1454); Giovanni Tommaso, dottore leggi, giudice di Savigliano e Vicario in Cuneo; Giangiorgio, cavaliere di Malta (1609, 17 agosto).
