Dicen algunos autores que el fundador de este linaje fue Poncio de Guardia, uno de los que ayudaron al conde Borrell en 986 a libertar a Barcelona del yugo de los musulmanes. Sus descendientes reconquistaron los alrededores de la montaña de Montserrat, estableciendo varios señoríos. Fundaron y dotaron el famoso monasterio. En 1270, Melchor Guardia trocó este apellido por el de Montserrat como lo afirma mosén Jaime Febrer. Dicho caballero tomó parte en la conquista de Valencia. Su valor mereció mucha estimación del rey don Jaime I. Los Montserrat se extendieron por Cataluña, fundando nuevas casas en las ciudades de Reus (Tarragona) y de Cervera (Lérida), y también en la villa de Granyena, del partido de Cervera. Descendientes, sin duda, del caballero Melchor Guardia, llamado después Melchor Montserrat, que se halló en la conquista del reino de Valencia, moraron en la villa de Canet lo Roig, del partido judicial de San Mateo (Castellón de la Plana).
