Muchos tratadistas, entre ellos Juan de Mendoza, Jerónimo de Villa, Antonio de Sotomayor y el Doctro Isasti, dicen, al tratar de la noble alcurnia y preclaro origen de este apellido, que el Conde Tibaut o Tibaldo (hermano del Conde Grimaldo y de Carlos Martel, hijos los tres de los Duques de Bravante, y progenitores de Pipino, Carlo Magno y demás Reyes antiguos de Francia), vino a España a principios del siglo VIII para pelear contra los moros, bajo las banderas de don Pelayo. Por su intrepidez y por lo continuamente que recorrió los montes hostigando a los sarracenos, se le dió el sobrenombre de "M.", que conservaron, como apellido, sus descendientes. De esta versión resulta que el solar más antiguo de los M. radicó en Asturias. Pasaron después a la Montaña de Santander, y en el siglo XVI se establecieron en la ciudad de Córdoba, fundando su casa solar frente al convento de las Dueñas. Estos M. de Córdoba enlazaron con las familias de Aguayo, Cárcamo, La Corte, Angulo Góngora, Torquemada, Vera, Velasco, Fernández de Cañete, Fernández de Córdova y otras. Entre los muchos privilegios que disfrutó esta casa se destaca el que llamaban de la "Cepa", que consistía en un doble de campanas, que se tocaban por la noche en la torre de la Catedral el día de la inhumación de alguno de los individuos de esta familia.
