La familia de este apellido es oriunda de la comarca de Groninga en los Países Bajos, aunque vino a las Islas desde la ciudad de Colonia, en Alemania. El nombre de M. es la traducción del apellido Groenenberg, que ostentaban estos caballeros, antes de establecerse en Canarias. Jácome de Groenenberg nació en Colonia el año 1472 y se casó en Flandes con Margarita de Pruss, natural de Embeses, inmediaciones de Amberes. El matrimonio se traladó a Canarias, estableciéndose en la isla de San Miguel de la Palma, por los años 1500. Tuvo cinco hijos: Melchor, Diego y Juan de Monteverde, nacido este último en La Palma en 1519. Casó en la isla con Doña María de Estupiñán y Socarrás. Tuvo también a Miguel de M., que fue Regidor de la Palma y a Ana de M., nacida en 1524, también en La Palma. El General Don Manuel M. y Bethencourt nació en La Orotava el 16 de junio de 1796. Esta familia adquirío mucha notoriedad en Tenerife y se halla hoy enlazada con las principales familias canarias; entre ellas, con la Casa de Castillo. Don Francisco de M. Pimienta y de Bermeo, de La Laguna, ingresó en la orden de Santiago en 1694; en la Orden de Calatrava, Don José Gabriel de M. y Llarena; en la Real Maestranza de Sevilla, Don Juan de M. y Montañés y en la Orden de Carlos III, Don Domingo de M. y Rivas. ...
