Apellido de origen asturiano. Procede del concejo de Gijón, descendiente, según la leyenda, de un caballero que en la Batalla de Covadonga apresó a la hija de un rey moro, con la que tuvo algunos hijos que, por ser su madre mora, se llamaron "Moranes". Otra familia de este apellido está formada por el caballero irlandés Don Patricio M. Mulay, capitán comandante del Regimiento del Conde Mahoni, teniente del rey, en la plata y ciudad de Denia, donde murió en 1714. Pertenecía a la familia de Moran u O' Moran, que como otras noble de Irlanda abandonaron el país cuando fueron perseguidos por su fe católica y fidelidad a la Casa de Estuardo, estableciéndose en la ciudad de Gandía, donde fundara su casa solariega amayorazgada, con escudo de armas en su frontis que todavía perdura. Don Patricio M. Mulay era hijo de Don Jerónimo M., y de su esposa Cathalina Mulay, vecinos de la ciudad de Jamestown en Irlanda, que reinó en el siglo I de nuestra Era. Don Patricio casó en primeras nupcias con Doña Teresa Abarca e Ibáñez, en la Colegiata de Gandía el 19 de marzo de 1708 y luego con Doña Teresa Mulet, con la que tuvo un hijo llamado Gaspar, que nació en 1713. Del primer matrimonio nació como hijo único Don josé Morán Abarca, el 23 de mayo de 1711, en Gandía donde casó el 5 de octubre de 1735, con Doña Mariana Cebriá Sala, hija de los Barones de Mislata y Morena. Uno de sus descendientes fue Don Salvador Moran Socias, bautizato en la Parroquia de San Pedro de Jávita el 13 de junio de 1859. ...
