Este apellido es de origen francés, pero se españolizó al pasar a Chile uno de sus individuos, que fué Juan Francisco Briand de la M., bautizado en Saint-Malo el 12 de Diciembre de 1682. Fué Capitán de Fragata de la Armada francesa que estuvo en Chile, Capitán de Caballos en 1717, Tesorero de la Santa Cruzada de la ciudad de Concepción en 1725 y Maestre de Campo. Todos estos cargos los desempeñó después de haber obtenido la nacionalidad española. Casó en la Catedral de la ciudad de Concepción el 25 de Mayo de 1716 con doña Juana Francisca Cagigal del Solar y Solar, natural de Concepción, y falleció el 22 de Julio de 1751 en Santiago de Chile, dejando varios hijos, que al españolizar su apellido paterno se llamaron M. Fueron éstos: Juan de M. y Cagigal del Solar, que sigue, Francisca Javiera de M. y Cagigal del Solar, nacida en Santiago de Chile, donde casó el 15 de marzo de 1737 con Francisco García Huidobro, Vizconde de San Jerónimo y Marqués de Casa Real, cuya ascendencia quedó referida en la información del apellio García Huidobro, Juan José de M. y Cagigal del Solar, nacido en Santiago de Chile y esposo de doña Josefa Aldunate, a la que hizo madre de Tomasa de M. y Aldunate, mujer de Fernando Argomedo y Zabala, y Josefa de M. y Cagigal del Solar, casada con Francisco Díaz de Saravia. Juan de M. y Cagigal del Solar nació en Santiago de Chile y fué Maestre de Campo y Coronel de Milicias. Celebró su enlace en Santiago el 30 de Noviembre de 1770 con doña Mariana de Prado. ...
