Este apellido es originario del Valle de Liébana, del partido judicial de Potes (Santander). Después fundó una nueva casa solar en la ciudad de Medina del Campo (Valladolid), con enterramiento propio bajo uno de los arcos de la capilla mayor, lado del Evangelio, en la Iglesia Colegiata. Sus individuos tomaron parte muy activa en las luchas de la Reconquista y se distinguieron, especialmente, en la toma de la ciudad de Ronda, en 1485, por los Reyes Católicos. Uno de los caballeros más antiguos de este linaje de que se tiene noticia fué Juan M., padre, al parecer, de Diego Hernando M., que sigue, Juan M., Capitán en la conquista de la mencionada ciudad de Ronda, y Francisco de Toro M., que también acompañó a los Reyes Católicos en la toma de Ronda. En esta ciudad quedó heredado y casó con doña Teresa Ruiz de Valdavia, de la que tuvo estos tres hijos: Jorge, Alonso y Francisco M. y Valdavia. Fué hijo y sucesor de Francisco M. y Valdavia Iñigo M. o Iñigo de Toro M., que celebró su enlace con doña María Téllez Girón (hija de Pedro Téllez Girón, Alcalde de la villa de Archidona, Málaga). Diego Hernando M. continuó residiendo en Medina del Campo y fué descendiente suyo Pedro M., natural de Medina del Campo y Comendador de Plasencia, en la Orden de Santiago, que casó con doña Isabel de Ribera, y procrearon a Francisco M. y Ribera, que sigue; Juan M. y Ribera, llamado también Juan de Ribera M., de la General y Suprema Inquisición; y Antonio M. y Ribera, Inquisidor de Toledo. ...
