L'abbé Auguste Roche dans son Armorial des évêques de Viviers, nous donne la généalogie de cette famille. Généalogie à laquelle nous empruntons les notes qui suivent: Mortemart est une commune du canton de Mézières; arrondissement de Bellac, (Haute-Vienne). La famille qui porte ce nom est une branche de celle de Rochechouart, ainsi appelée d'un fief de la paroisse de Biennot, au diocèse de Limoges. Nous n'avons en France de maison qui surpasse celle de Rochechouart en grandeur d'origine et antiquité. Le premier seigneur du nom est Aymeric I de Rochechouart quatrième fils de Géraud, vicomte de Limoges, et de Bathilde de Brosse. Il épousa, vers 990, Ave, dame de Rochechouart qu'on croit fille d'un comte d'Angoulême. Une charte de 1018, consacre une donation faite par lui et par Ave, sa femme, de la moitié de l'église de Nioil, au monastère d'Izerche. Pierre, évêque de Viviers, était fils de Guillaume de Rochechouart, chevalier, seigneur de Mortemart qui épousa, vers 1260, Marguerite de Mareval; fille de noble Philippe, seigneur dudit lieu, au voisinage de Rochechouart. Pierre de Mortemart fut nommé, à l'évêché de Viviers, le 1er juillet ou fin de ce même mois en 1322. Le 2 novembre 1326, notre évêque quitte Viviers pour le siège d'Auxerre où il fut reçu ce jour-là de toutes les solennités habituelles. Dans le consistoire, du 18 décembre 1327, Jean XXII le créa cardinal du titre des S.S. Pierre et Marcellin ou, selon d'autres auteurs de Saint-Etienne au Mont Coelius. ...
