La cognominizzazione dovrebbe derivare da uno dei toponimi con la radice Mola, probabile luogo di origine del capostipite. Nei ricordi dei tempi andati si leggono alcune varianti di questo cognome quali Mola,di Mola, Dimola, Molani etc., per le solite cause della fonetica storica, degli errori di trascrizione e delle inflessioni dialettali. E' presentemente distinta in due linee, quella dei conti di Nomaglio e quella dei conti di Larizzate. Stipite della prima è Giovanni Albertino (n. Carignano, 5 febb. 1609; dec. ivi, 6 febb. 1674), della seconda è Francesco Andrea, figli di Lelio (n. 1585, dec, Carignano, 5 aprile 1645), e di Caterina di Luigi Berta, il primo, e di Margherita del conte Luigi Alberione, il secondo.
