Antica ed illustre famiglia sarda, con residenza in Sorso, provincia di Sassari, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. I Murgiani avevano un grosso patrimonio e pubblicamente erano considerati nobili; nel 1634 ottennero il riconoscimento del cavalierato ereditario e della nobiltà, con i fratelli Antonio ed Alfonso, i quali furono ammessi allo stamento militare, nel 1643, durante il Parlamento Avellano.
