Diretta diramazione dei Cassano, traggono origine dai manfredinghi e le loro prime notizie risalgono alla fine del X secolo: un Martino fu creato da Ottone II (973-983) feudatario del castello de' C. situato nelle vicinanze dell'attuale comune di Carbonara. A pag. 86 poi lo stesso Carnevale riferisce assai ingenuamente quanto segue: "Il Marliano afferma che la famiglia dei C. proveniva dalla Grecia e che allora si chiamava Cubea dai cubi o quadretti azzurri e bianchi che esistevano sul di lei stemma, ed in appresso avendo ricevuto in feudo il castello C., sito poco distante da Tortona, lasciarono l'antico cognome per assumere quello del feudo". Smantelliamo un po' queste ridicole favole: per prima cosa i C. discendenti dai Cassano ebbero origine nel contado di Tortona e non dalla Grecia e Tanto meno poteva deonominarsi Cubea dai cubi o quadretti che figuravano nel loro stemma quando l'uso di armi gentilizie ebbe inizio ...
