Famiglia di buonissimo ceto, originaria di Montecuccolo nel Frignano, trasse il cognome da certo Parente o Parenzio vivente nel secolo XIV. Un pronipote di costui, di nome Pellegrino, generò tre figli: Francesco, Giovanni e Marco o Marchiò, che nel secolo XV originarono tre linee, le quali, dai nomi delle località dove allignavano, furono dette di Montecuccolo, di Montorso e della Serra di Marchiò. Da Marco nacque altro Pellegrino, laureato in Divinità nel 1605 a Bologna, poi docente in quell'Archiginnasio; fu uno dei fondatori della Congregazione di San Filippo Neri della Madonna di Galliera e morì nel 1630. Uomo di santa vita, dopo morte venne onorato del titolo di venerabile. Il Comune di Bologna, con Riformazione 3 marzo 1617, a riconoscimento e a premio dei servizi prestati, concesse a lui a ai suoi nipoti e discendenti da questi la cittadinanza bolognese.
