Muy antiguo y noble linaje de Galicia. Su primitivo solar estuvo sito en la llamada Peña de Novoa, en la hoy parroquia de Novoa, del partido judicial de Ribadavia y provincia de Orense. Los N. fueron Señores de la tierra de Novoa (de la que tomaron el nombre) y también de su castillo, y enlazaron varias veces con descendientes de la casa Real de Castilla y de León. Algunos autores dicen que el solar de N. radicó en tierra de Lúnia, en la parroquia de Maceda, del partido judicial de Alláriz, en la misma provincia de Orense, y que era una casafuerte, por lo que fué llamado casa de Maceda. No están equivocados en su afirmación los aludidos tratadistas, puesto que la casa-fuerte de Maceda también fué solar de los N., aunque no el primitivo. Su primitivo solar fué, según la opinión más generalizada, el que estuvo sito en tierra de Novoa, ya que ofrece mayor antigüedad que el otro. La genealogía de los progenitores del linaje aparece bastante confusa a causa de los remotos tiempos en que vivieron, y se observan notorias contradicciones en los datos que aportan sobre los primeros caballeros N. los historiadores y genealogistas de mayor autoridad. Se logra, sin embargo, tras de contrastar y depurar detenidamente esos datos, esclarecer la filiación de sus primeras generaciones, con escasas dudas y lagunas. Ayuda a esto el estar íntimamente unida la genealogía de los antiguos N. a la del linaje Yáñez, también gallego y originario de tierras de Orense. ...
