Apellido de origen castellano. De Cabada, en el Valle de Trasmiera, provincia de Santander. Probó su nobleza en las Ordenes de Santiago y San Juan de Jerusalén y numerosas veces en la Real Chancillería de Valladolid. Don Joaquín de O. y Moneda fue creado Marqués de Villacastell de Carriás en 4 de septiembre de 1742. Doña María Maldonado Tafur y Dávolos Toledo Guzmán, hija menor del Conquistador de Granada Francisco Fernández Maldonado, contrajo matrimonio en Loja con el Licenciado Alonso Sanz de Olivares, Oidor y Regente de la Real Audiencia de Canarias, que era hijo del Licenciado Gonzalo Sanz de Olivares y nieto de otro Alonso Sanz de O., también Jurisconsulto, noble Hijodalgo de la villa del Castillo de Garci-Moñoz. Don Alonso Sanz de O. murió en Gran Canaria el año 1551 y su viuda Doña María Maldonado en Garachico de Tenerife, dejando de este matrimonio siete hijos: Don Francisco Maldonado de O., Don Gaspar de O. Maldonado y Tafur, Don Melchor de O. Maldonado, Doña de O. Maldonado, Doña María Tafur O., Doña Catalina Maldonado O. y Tafur Doña Beatriz de O. Maldonado. Don José de O. y Llarena y Vallejo, Capitán de las Milicias de La Orotava, probó su nobleza en la Orden de Santiago en 1645. Otra casa muy antigua. En la anteiglesia de Ceánuri (Vizcaya), hallamos una familia así apellidada, de la que fué Damián de O., que en su mujer doña María de Gortázar tuvo a Manuel de O. y Gortázar, bautizado en Ceánuri el 16 de Septiembre de 1708, que casó con doña Margarita de Ocerin Jáuregui, y fueron padres de Juan Antonio de O. y Ocerin, bautizado en Ceánuri el 13 de Mayo de 1750 y casado con doña María Antonia de Añibarro, natural de Villaro. De este enlace fué hijo Juan Antonio de O. y Añibarro, bautizado en Ceánuri el 14 de Abril de 1778, que residió en Valladolid, en cuya Chancillería obtuvo Real provisión de vizcainía el 14 de Noviembre de 1797. Otra casa del mismo apellido. Familias de este apellido, originarias de distintas casas solares, radicaron en diversas regiones españolas. ...
