El origen de este apellido es alavés y tuvo su cuna en el punto denominado Sopeña por encontrarse debajo de una gran peña, sobre la cual está la tierra que llaman de Sopeña, en el Condado de Ayala, alzándose su casa solar cerca del lugar de Sojo, que hoy pertenece al Ayuntamiento de Ayala y partido judicial de Amurrio, en la provincia de Álava. Así lo escribe Fray Pedro de M. en su obra "Arbol y genealógica descendencia de las Casas de Ayala y Murga", continuada y anotada por don Fernando de la Quadra Salcedo. Su fundación tiene carácter fabuloso, puesto que se la atribuyen a un caballero godo de los que desembarcaron en el puerto de Santoña (Santander) en el siglo V. Igual acontece con el hecho que dió motivo y nombre al apellido O. y que Fray Pedro de Murga refiere así: "Aviendo aquel Cavallero godo pedido a los naturales de aquella tierra de Sopeña, puesto y sitio donde pudiese poblar, y aviéndoselo negado; y tomando él con los suyos las armas contra ellos, oprimidos y forzados vinieron a hacer de la necesidad virtud, y digeron, Oribi: que en nuestro vulgar idioma es lo mismo que: tomad dos: o escoged dos suelos, los que para poblar quisiéreis. Por manera que de aver los naturales dicho al poblador de la antigua y nobilísima Casa: Oribi: se llamó Orive". La casa solar de O. gozó de la vecindad del citado pueblo y de grandes privilegios y honores sobre sus convecinos y feligreses de su parroquia de San Julián. ...
