Este apellido es muy antiguo en Galicia, pero sin que alcance la exagerada y caprichosa antigüedad que le atribuyen algunos genealogistas del siglo XVII; cuya pintoresca fantasía le hace proceder nada menos que de Osiris, Rey de Egipto y padre de Atheo, al que consideran fundador del solar de Atheanes (más propiamente Teanes), sin otro fundamento, evidentemente, que la semejanza de ambos nombres. Lo cierto es que, tanto O. como Osorio, eran nombres propios que aparecen con frecuencia en manuscritos del siglo IX y anteriores, convertidos más tarde en patronímicos y luego en apellidos. Ya en el siglo VIII figuran O. en varias escrituras, pudiéndose citar concretamente la que fué otorgada en el año de 1782 por los abades dúplices del Monasterio de Sobrado (provincia de La Coruña) doña Munia y don Gutierre, donando la iglesia de San Juan de Joanco, sita en el territorio de Xanites, junto al río Viomen, a Transvario O. y su mujer doña Aucencia o Aucenia. El Monasterio de Sobrado fué fundado en 752 por el Obispo Sismando y sus padres, que se hicieron monjes en él. De los antiguos solares del apellido que estudiamos, quizás fuera el primitivo el de Pambre (cuando Ulloa y O. eran unos mismos), lugar en el que Gonzalo O. de Ulloa, de quien proceden los Monterrey, levantó un imponente y hermoso castillo que aún existe muy bien conservado en su parte pétrea, con cinco torreones y recinto almenado.
