Antica ed illustre famiglia umbra che vuolsi discenda dal nobile casato marchigiano Mariotti, cui esponenti appartennero anche all'Ordine di San Maurizio e poi a quello dei SS. Maurizio e Lazzaro, nonché all'ordine di S. Stefano, e che affonda le proprie radici nella città di Fano, ove rifulgeva già nell'XI secolo. Divisosi nel tempo in molti rami, alcuni di questi furono conosciuti tramite diversi soprannomi: Tommasoni, Pesaresi, Paccapelo, Mancini, Santucci ed altri. In particolare il ramo che si era portato in territorio umbro, e più precisamente in Umbertide, nel corso del settecento si divise ulteriormente in due ramificazioni. L'una continuò a cognominarsi Mariotti, l'altra abbandonò l'originario cognome per assumere quello con cui era maggiormente conosciuto: Paccapelo. Meno verosimile appare quella ricostruzione araldica secondo cui i Paccapelo discenderebbero dai nobilissimi Pacca, presenti in Campania sin dal XIII secolo.
