Negli antichi documenti modenesi, il cognome di questa famiglia è dato con varia grafia: ora Pultonero, ora Poltroniero, ora Paltoneri. Probabile capostipite, secondo anche la tradizione, ne fu quel Poltronrerius che negli anni 1168-1169 sedette tra i Consoli della città. L'anno 1202 Bernardus Poltronerius con altri principali cittadini di Modena giurava un trattato di lega col marchese Malaspina. Sembra che in quei tempi un ramo della famiglia passasse ad abitare a Bologna, dove fu aggregata a quella cittadinanza e figurò tra le principali. Nel libro dei Potenti e Nobili della città di Modena, compilato l'anno 1306, dopo la cacciata del presidio dell'Estense Signore, figurano iscritti Guillielmus de Pultoneriis coi figli e tutti gli altri della stessa famiglia. L'iscrizione in quel Libro nel quale erano notai coloro "qui digni non sunt esse in populo presenti", voleva dire essere esclusi da ogni partecipazione al governo ultrapopolare d'allora.
