Nobility crown PaoliniCette famille n'est pas originaire de Saint-Etienne, elle y a du moins acquis un droit de cité si incontestable, qu'elle peut passer pour une des plus anciennes de celles qui figurent dans les annales de cette ville. On la reconnaît déjà bien au-delà des limites fixées par les plus rigoureuses exigences généalogiques, et bien des familles seraient jalouses de pouvoir établir une aussi respectable antiquité, puisque dès le XIIIème siècle elle se montre revêtue de l'honorable charge du notariat. Pendant trois siècles elle vécut dans cette profession libérale et s'y conduisit avec tant de loyauté, qu'elle y grandit comme un chêne planté en bon terrain. Le notariat, dans les anciens temps, était respecté comme toutes les positions hors ligne; c'était la noblesse de plume, de science, de capacité. Nous pouvons citer plusieurs grandes familles qui descendent d'anciens notaires, elles ne manquent pas en Forez. Celle de Chantillon du Soleillan remontait à Jean de Chatillon, écuyer, notaire et secrétaire du roi, maison et couronne de France. Les Pellissier, à Saint-Etienne, ainsi que les De la Roère, les De la Roa, les Framage et autres revendiquent une pareille origine qui n'est certes pas à dédaigner. Sous nos premiers rois, les conventions se font par lettres (epistolœ), ou se prouvent par témoins; les formules s'introduisent, en même temps que les scribes chargés de prendre les notes se qualifient de notaires. Leurs charges deviennent importantes sous Charlemagne qui ordonne, par un de ses Capitulaires de l'an 803, que les Missi dominici nommeront des notaires dans toutes les localités populeuses; et alors quand on disit notaire, on entendait, un homme recommandable par sa science et sa probité, par ses bonnes mœurs et son incorruptibilité. Deux ans plus tard, en 805, le monarque forçait les évêques, les comtes et les abbés à avoir aussi les notaires, ce qui donna naissance aux notaires royaux, seigneuriaux et ecclésiastiques, dénominations qui se sont presque perpétuées jusqu'à nous. En même temps Charlemagne ordonna que les jugements et les actes publiés fussent rédigés en latin, afin qu'ils ne fussent plus exposés aux fausses intrprétations que favorisait l'inconcevable langage de ce temps, ...
