Da un paesello della Fontana buona, regione situata alle spalle di Chiavari, trae origine e nome questa famiglia. Il nome, diffuso poi in gran parte della Repubblica genovese, specialmente in Val Polcevera, ci apparre sin dal 1267, con un Antonio, in atti dei notari Giovanni d Corsio e Guglielmo de San Giorgio. Da un atto del notaro Vivaldo de Sarzano si rivela che nel 1273 Gandolfo fu eletto prevosto di S. Stefano di Rappallo. Lo stesso Gandolfo con Antonio, figlio di Durante, comprano con rogito del notaro Ugolino Scarpa. La tomba di Bartolomeo e Angelo, posta in San Lorenzo presso la porta di San Gottardo, reca la data 7 agosto 1317. Nel 1455 circa, Bartolomeo costrusse un planisfero, che insieme a 4 carte nautiche fu rintracciato nella Biblioteca Vittorio Emanuele di Roma.
