It was the name adopted by the Pahisee Saul of Tarsus after his conversion to Christianity on the road to Damascus (AD c.34). He was a most energetic missionary to the gentiles in the Roman Empire, and perhaps played a more significant role than any other of Christ's followers in establishing Christianity as a major world religion. The name was borne by numerous other saints. Variant´s: 'Paull', (chiefly Devon and Cornwall), 'Paule', 'Pawle'. The exact period of settlement in North America has not been definately determined but Information extracted from Public and Civil registry archive's confirm that one of the first settlers was a certain 'Joseph Paull', aged 30, from Somerset, England, emigrated to North America with his wife 'Margaret Roberts' in 1685. He was a member of the Provincial Council of Pensylvania in 1687. His son 'James Paull', changed the spelling of the family name to 'Paul' upon the birth of his son, also named 'James'.
