Nobility crown PayCette maison paraît au Comtat représentée dès le XVème siècle par Philibert, qui testa, le 26 août 1495. Il fut enseveli dans l'église paroissiale de St-Martin-de-Visan, près de Valréas, au diocèse de Saint-Paul-trois-Châteaux, dans le tombeau de sa famille. Son petit-fils Christophe de Payan, épousa, le 20 mars 1572, Marguerite de l'Hostel, dont il eut: Denis, écuyer, coseigneur de La Motte et de La Garde-Paréol, au Comtat Venaissin, comte palatin, bailli et régent général des terres et fiefs de son oncle, Jean de L'Hostel, évêque-comte de Viviers, obtint du roi, Louis XIII, des lettres patentes, en date du 4 novembre 1612, enregistrées à la Chambre des comptes de Languedoc le 23 novembre 1613, par lesquelles ce prince le déclare régnicole et issu d'ancienne noblesse ayant toujours vécu noblement. Il avait épousé, le 1er février 1603, Magdelaine de Philibert, dont il eut entre autres: Jean Payan de l'Hostel, coseigneur de La Garde-Paréol et de La Motte, seigneur de Saint-Auban, fut député aux Etats Généraux du Languedoc pour y représenter Louis de La Baume-Suze, évêque de Viviers, suivant une délibération de ces mêmes Etats Généraux du 7 novembre 1667. Il fut, ainsi que Jacques, son frère, maintenu dans sa noblesse d'ancienne extraction , les 13 décembre 1670 et 7 décembre 1677, par jugement de M. de Bezons, intendant du Languedoc. Cette famille forma plusieurs branches: celle des Payan de Lestang; celles des Payan du Moulin qui donna un principal au collège de Tournon; la branche des Payan de Champier ou Champié, toutes trois appartenant surtout au Dauphiné. La branche des Payan de Saint-Martin qui s'établit en Provence. ...
