La famiglia, anticamente detta dei Pellicciari, è di origine ferrarese. Il primo di cui abbiasi sicura notizia è Lorenzo al quale, nel 1177, furono affidati dal Comune di Firenze degli importanti incarichi. Menabue (1230), fu giudice e ambasciatore; Bartolo (1240), divenne membro del Consiglio e Fiduciario del Comune; Bartolomeo notaro e referendario di Casa d'Este; Giacomo giudice del Comune; cortigiano e favorito di Alberto d'Este, mutò il cognome in Pellizza, ed ebbe due figli, Iacopo e Guglielmo. Da Iacopo discende il ramo di Firenze (estintosi nella metà del sec. XIX con il conte Carlo ), e da Guglielmo discende il ramo di Ferrara. Il suddetto Iacopo fu segretario e ambasciatore del marchese Niccolò III d'Este, che gli donò molte terre, la giurisdizione di Serravalle con undici castelli e il titolo di conte.
