Como sucede en muchos apellidos toma su origen del nombre del lugar de nacimiento, estableciéndose en Tenerife y dando nombre a un caserío conocido como de P.. Con el añadido de la "t" final será conocido en lo sucesivo, extendiéndose por las islas, en particular en Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, a donde pasó destinado un Licenciado en Derecho que ejerció en la Real Audiencia de la Capital, formando así un nuevo tronco de este linaje.
