Originaria del Cilento, ne fu capostipite il milite Stanislao del Pezzo, che visse nel 1109. Divisa in due grandi linee, la prima restò nel Cilento, e l'altra passò a Salerno. Questa si suddivise in tre rami, il primo de' quali passato in Napoli, si è estinto da non molti anni; il secondo, decorato del titolo di marchesi di Civitaretenga, si è estinto nel XIX secolo nella famiglia Grimaldi, e del terzo non si hanno più aggiornamenti araldici dal 1834. Dal ramo del Cilento discendono i duchi di Cajanello. Questa famiglia ha goduto nobiltà in Amalfi, in Salerno nel seggio di Campo e in quello di Portaretese, ed in Napoli nei seggi di Montagna e di Portanuova, ed ha vestito l'abito del S. M. O. Gerosolim. nel 1551. Ha posseduto 35 baronie, i marchesati di Civitaretegna e di Campodisola, il ducato di Cajanello, ed il principato di S. Pio della Camera. Francesco fu giudice della gran Corte della Vicaria nel 1549; Giovanni Alfonso fu capitano a guerra della città di Bari nel 1553; Ottavio, tenente generale della milizia del regno nel 1647. Ha dato alla Chiesa un Cesare, vescovo di Sulmona e di Valva nel 1593; un Clemente Vescovo di Aquila poi di Castellammare nel 1651; ed un Antonio Arciv. di Sorrento nel 1641. Venne ascritta al Registro delle famiglia dei Cavalieri di Malta di giustizia, principi di S. Pio della Camera dal 1645, duchi di Caianello dal 1651 e marchese per successione della famiglia De Simone, con anzianità dal 1722.
