La più antica memoria di questa famiglia risale al 1292, anno in cui vicaro di Enrico di Pietrapelosa investiva Asquino di Vermo, suo zio, dei castelli di Pietrapelosa e di Grifignana nell'Istria. Al castello di Pietrapelosa era annesso il titolo marchionale.
