L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, al dir di illustri genealogisti, andrebbe ricercata nella fusione del nome proprio "Pietro" con l'aferesi del personale "Lorenzo", appartenuti, con certezza quasi assoluta, ai capostipiti, purtroppo, oggi ignoti. Tal casato venne, verosimilmente, fregiato del cavalierato, in seguito alla partecipazione, sotto i vessilli aragonesi, connotata da coraggio e virtù, di un Matteo Pietrorenzo alla guerra d'Otranto, del 1481, contro gli ottomani. Anche successivamente, inoltre, la famiglia, sempre, si distinse per gli illustri personaggi, a cui diede i natali, tra i quali, ricordiamo: Martino, che partecipò alla difesa del Regno delle Due Sicilie, minacciato da Ludovico di Baviera; Giovanni, maestro d'armi in Avellino, nel XIV secolo; cav.
