Prese questo nome da Giovanni potente barone di vari castelli in Mugello e Valdarno vissuto nel secolo VIII. Giovanni di Corrado fu armato cavaliere da Carlo Magno nell'805, e M. Terzo, M. Giovanni e M. Otto decorati dell'onore medesimo dall'Imperatore Ottone III nel 1003. Furono conosciuti ancora sotto il nome di Nobili da Villanuova da un loro possesso.
