Uno de los más ilustres linajes de Navarra y Álava es el de P. Trae su origen del Infante navarro don Ramiro Sánchez (hijo del Rey don Sancho V de Navarra, llamado "el Noble" y "el Sabio"), a quien despojó de su reino su tío don Ramón, viéndose obligado a refugiarse en Valencia, de donde salió con otros caballeros navarros para tomar parte en las Cruzadas. Las antiguas crónicas refieren que la fe que puso dicho infante en aquella gran empresa y el valor con que intervino en todas las jornadas, merecieron que Dios le premiase deparándole la fortuna de encontrar en la probática piscina un pedazo de la verdadera cruz, "lignum crucis", en que el Señor consumó nuestra redención, siendo inmenso el júblio que entre los cruzados produjo tan extraordinario suceso. De vuelta en España fundó don Ramiro Sánchez la Real Divisa de Santa María de la P. y otorgó testamento en el monasterio de San Pedro de Cardeña, el 13 de Noviembre de 1110, encomendando a su pariente don Virila, abad de dicho monasterio, que con sus bienes edificara en sus tierras de la Sonsierra de Navarra una iglesia edicada a la Santísima Virgen y en la que se rindiese culto al "lignum crucis" que había traído de Jerusalén. La iglesia y la casa de la Divisa de la P. fueron levantadas en lo que hoy es villa de San Vicente de la Sonsierra, que entonces pertenecía a la Sonsierra de Navara, y en la actualidad al partido judicial de Haro, en la Rioja. ...
