Wert anfangs 1/20 Gulden, später nach Ort und Zeit wechselnd. Umlaufsgebiet war hauptsächlich die Schweiz, Schwaben und der ganze Strich den Rhein abwärts. Mutterform ist das niederländische blafaert aus dem französischen blafard, dies aus dem althochdeutschen bleihfaro gleich bleich, blaß. Der Name der Münze also nach der Farbe wie Weißpfennig, Albus und (schweizerisch) Blanken. Die oberdeutsche Form nach klangmalendem "plapp" und dem appellativischen "hart".
