En el partido judicial de Santander hay un pueblo llamado Polanco, cuyo nombre está sin duda relacionado con este linaje. Si el linaje tomó el nombre del pueblo o si a éste se lo dió el linaje, no lo esclarecen las más antiguas noticias que hemos encontrado de este apellido. Pero de pronunciarnos por alguna de esas dos probabilidades, lo haríamos en apoyo de la primera, estableciendo su origen en dicho lugar, aunque no su más rancia casa solar conocida. Esta casa radicó en la villa de Santillana, del partido judicial de Torrelavega, pertenecía al Cabildo de su Colegiata y éste la cedió con fecha 1 de Junio de 1338, siendo Prior don Alfonso Díez, y Abad don Sancho González de Guevara, para hacer merced a un miembro del linaje P., llamado Juan P., y a su mujer doña María, vecinos de Santillana. En la escritura de cesión se dice que "la cual casa con su plaza tiene por costaneras, de la una parte, la casa con su plaza que fué de Bartolomé Beneyto e de María Johan su mujer, e de la otra parte, la casa de Johan Pérez de Piñera con su plaza, e por delante frontea en la plaza del Rey, e por detrás en la plaza de Pero Darce e de Juan Darce". Se añade en el mismo curioso documento que la indicada casa era dada por juro de heredad a Juan P. y a su mujer doña María, así como a sus herederos, puediendo virvir en ella, labrarla, darla, cambiarla, venderla y hacer de ella como de cosa propia.
