Nobility crown PorterJuan de Mendoza escribe que este apellido lo trajeron de Francia a Cataluña caballeros que acompañaron a Carlomagno en la campaña de aquel Principado y que hicieron su asiento en Barcelona, donde florecieron apellidándose P. Agrega que más tarde pasaron a Aragón y Castilla, añadiendo la vocal "o" que convirtió el apellido P. en el de Portero, por lo que ambos son uno mismo. Los oscuros y lejanos tiempos a que remonta el citado autor el origen francés de este linaje, es natural que nos inclinen a restar crédito a sus noticias. Los P. tuvieron casa en Barcelona, de las que salieron ramas que llevaron el apellido a otras localidades de Cataluña. En Aragón era muy principal la familia que residió en la villa de Benasque y en la ciudad de Barbastro, de la provincia de Huesca, y en la ciudad de Zaragoza. A esa familia pertenecía en mediados del siglo XVI Juan P., natural de Benasque, que en su mujer, doña Jerónima Escanilla, natural de Barbastro, tuvo a El Doctor Juan P. Escanilla, natural de Benasque, según un expediente de pruebas de la Orden de Santiago, o de Barbastro, según otro de la Orden de Alcántara. Fué del Consejo de Su Majestad y su Fiscal en la Real Audiencia de Aragón. Contrajo matrimonio con doña Esperanza Casanate, natural de Tarazona (hija de Francisco Casanate, natural de Tarazona, y de doña Isabel Despés, natural de Zaragoza), naciendo de esa unión Juan José P. y Casanate, que sigue, y El Almirante Pedro P. y Casanate, natural de Zaragoza. ...
