Originaria di Fiesole, ebbe per capostipite un Portinajo di Folco che vivea nel 1187 e del quale i suoi discendenti presero il nome. Ha dato alla patria 14 priori dal 1282 al 1529, primo de'quali fu Folco di Ricovero, il fondatore dell'ospedale di S. Maria Novella, di cui fu figlia Beatrice resa immortabile dall'Alighieri. Fra gli uomini più chiari di questa famiglia convien ricordare un Pigello di Folco, nel 1456 mandato ambasciatore al Re d'Aragona e deditissimo a Cosimo de'Medici, da cui fu mandato a reggere il banco che i Medici avevano in Milano, dove Pigello stabilì la propria famiglia. Tommaso, suo fratello, andò ambasciatore alla Regina Isabella di Castiglia nel 1480, ed Antonio, suo figlio, fu commissario in Pisa nel 1511.
