Antica ed illustre famiglia campana, la quale trae origine dalla famiglia pugliese Portolano, da cui, inoltre, ereditò il titolo di cavaliere. Un Celestino Portolano, infatti, era stato, verosimilmente, ammesso agli onori ed ai privilegi del cavalierato, in seguito alla sua partecipazione, sotto i vessilli aragonesi, connotata da coraggio e virtù, alla guerra d'Otranto, del 1481, contro gli Ottomani. La famiglia Portolani, tuttavia, sorse, come nucleo autonomo, solamente nel secolo successivo, ovvero quando un Damiano ed un Ernesto, protomedici, operavano presso la Corte Napoletana. I discendenti di costoro, i quali continuarono a risiedere nel napoletano, probabilmente per errori di tradizione manoscritta o per differenziarsi dagli omonimi parenti pugliesi, iniziarono a cognominarsi Portolani.
