La famiglia Portunato è assai antica e nobile, originaria della Toscana, nel corso dei secoli si propagò prevalentemente in Liguria, i nomi dei suoi componenti si trovano soprattutto ricordati in contratti di acquisto di terre e case. Annovera questa illustre casata personaggi di elevate virtù ma la penuria delle scritture in quegli antichi secoli ci priva di quelle curiosità più nobili che si possono desiderare, le più antiche notizie sono di un Giovanni Portunato maestro d'armi in Massa che ottenne il priorato nel 1364; Francesco, originario di La Spezia, martire ed eroe della spedizione di Crimea del 1855-56. Dalle Iscrizioni delle antiche lapidi sepolcrali delle chiese di Monte San Giuliano, edito in Pisa, presso la direzione del Giornale Araldico, Rocca San Casciano del 1886, riporta di questa famiglia originaria di Toscana, ove ebbe dimora in Massa. Tra gl'antichi Cavalieri che anticamente nella militar disciplina fiorirono in Toscana. Chì non è informato delle mutazioni dello stato, e governo, alle quali è soggiaciuta la Repubblica, non può dare giudizio delle famiglie, le quali realmente sono nobili, e della primaria nobiltà; e a prima vista quella famiglia,che non mostra quell'apparato de' priori, e Confalonieri, disteso ne' Prioristi, che sono le Tratte di questa Città, non pare, che questi l'intelletto d'un'huomo ben purificato; e però nacque qualche bisbiglio nel consiglio de' Cavalieri della Sacra, e Illustrissima Religione di S. Stefano. ...
