De Vizcaya, con antiguo solar en la villa de Lequeitio, del partido judicial de Marquina. Varios tratadistas dicen que de dicho solar era ogirinario Sancho Martínez, quien en la batalla de las Navas de Tolosa defendió una posición llamada el "Puerto", quedándose este nombre por apellido y continuándolo sus descendientes. Algunos de éstos se avecindaron en la ciudad de Baeza. El marcado carácter de leyenda que tiene esa versión no abona el crédito de la misma Caballeros de este linaje se hallaron, sin duda, en la batalla de la Navas de Tolosa, puesto que así lo acusa uno de sus más antiguos blasones; pero es dudoso que el hecho referido originaria la formación del apellido. Del solar de Lequeitio se derivó la casa de Puerto en la villa de Bilbao, y la misma procedencia se atribuye a la familia que hizo su asiento en Oñate (Guipúzcoa) y a la que perteneció Sebastián López del P., natural de Oñate, que casó con doña Mariana López de Hernani, de igual naturaleza, y procrearon a Sebastián López del P. y López de Hernani, natural de Oñate, que contrajo matrimonio con doña María de Amezqueta y Ucelay, de la misma naturaleza (hija de Juan de Amezqueta y de doña Carolina Ucelay, naturales de Oñate), naciendo de esta unión El Gobernador Marcos del P. Amezqueta, que se cruzó Caballero de la Orden de Santiago en 1659. ...
